Inlays and Onlays in Kelowna
Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays tooth restorations that are created outside the mouth. They are often used when tooth decay affects the top of a chewing surface on one of the molars. Instead of a filling, an inlay or onlay is custom-fitted to the tooth and secured in place. They can be more durable, allowing a patient to easily bite and chew.
What is the Difference Between Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are very similar in structure. The main difference between them is the area of the tooth they cover. While inlays do not cover the “cusps” of molars (the ridges of the teeth that rise up higher), onlays can include the cusps of the teeth.
How Are Inlays and Onlays Created?
When using inlays and onlays, your dentist will clear out the decayed area of the tooth, just as they would if they were going to apply a filling. Then, instead of filling the cleared out area with composite resin, they will measure the space and have a custom inlay or onlay created in a dental laboratory. Once it’s ready, the inlay or onlay can be laid on the tooth that’s being repaired and secured in place.
