Root Canals in Kelowna
Root Canals
Although the outer shell of a tooth is hard, there is a soft inner pulp that is susceptible to infection. When an infection affects a tooth, a root canal procedure can help prevent the spread of the infection and save the tooth. Our dental team performs many root canals each year, and they are a fairly straightforward procedure.
When You Need a Root Canal
Root canals are most often required when an infection takes hold in the soft inner “pulp” of a tooth. Some of the signs of an infected tooth include pain while chewing or biting, new and lingering sensitivity to hot and cold food or drink, pimples on the gums, swollen or tender gums, or darkening around the gums. If you experience these symptoms, be sure to book an appointment with your dentist to have your teeth checked for infection.
How Root Canals Work
Root canal procedures are a very common treatment and can easily be performed in our dental offices in Kelowna. During a root canal procedure, a hole is drilled into the tooth so the infected pulp can be cleared out. The tooth is then filled and closed with a filling. After this step, your dentist will likely place a dental crown over the tooth, which completely reinforces it and allows you to continue biting and chewing easily and without pain.
