Teeth Extractions
Although our dentists will always do our best to preserve your natural teeth, there are some circumstances when it makes sense to remove a tooth to preserve your overall oral health. Simple tooth extractions are a routine procedure and can usually be completed quickly and easily with local anesthesia. For more complicated situations, surgical removal may be recommended.
When Tooth Extractions Are Necessary
There are several reasons a dentist may recommend a tooth extraction, including when there is overcrowding in the mouth. Additionally, when tooth decay or tooth infections become too serious for a root canal, it may be necessary to remove the tooth from the mouth. When your dentist removes a tooth, they may recommend a replacement for the tooth in the mouth so you can continue chewing and eating easily. Replacements can include dental bridges, dentures, or dental implants.
Recovering from Tooth Extractions
You may feel slight discomfort for a day or two after your procedure. Limit your physical activity, stick to soft or liquid foods (such as soup, applesauce, yogurt, or smoothies), and use an ice pack for 10 minutes at a time to reduce swelling. It’s important to follow the full aftercare instructions our dental team gives you to avoid any risk of infection or injury to the socket.
